“You would think with all the healthy things I do I’d never get sick.” That is what I thought. When I turned my life mission toward healthy alternatives from my former “Party Girl” Lifestyle, I really thought my health issues were over. The truth is I was just like everyone else. No Super Powers Here!
All this yoga, walking, water drinking, supplement taking, doctor visiting, smoke quitting and alcohol consumption elimination did something though, it got me in touch with my physical body. I began this journey with yoga asana (poses) and pranayama (conscious breathing) which lead to leaving Camel Cigarettes behind, eating a better diet (mainly tossing the soda habit and fast-food as a way of life.) For years I was on a roll, just feeling so much better
and able to do so much more. I expanded my work to a huge level and was doing things after work and kicking it on the weekends. Warrior Woman of health, I thought. I was ignoring some little things that seemed bothersome, but, probably a result of the encroaching 50th year of my life. My parts must be wearing out, menopausal, unable to handle stress, low blood sugar perhaps? Well, I was wrong! Tests showed advanced Grave’s Disease with lesions and nodules on my Thyroid shooting mass quantities of hormone into my system often and randomly. This was likely exacerbated by three high stress life events happening in succession. Geez, I thought I was going crazy.
To this point, I was so happy that I had the Ayurvedic Yoga tools all along. I had a good foundation for health, which made abnormalities more clear. Also, I didn’t have other factors to worry about beyond the Grave’s Disease. As a side note here, I want to mention that in modern times yoga practitioners and instructors should never advise against modern medicine. My personal approach is using diet, exercise, Shaklee protein shakes plus supplements and other techniques to treat and maintain my personal health equilibrium, but, always get an annual physical, mammogram, and follow my doctors advice. No modern yogi should try to treat themselves or rely only on nature to be well. Modern medicine is superior in this respect, but, taking responsibility for our personal wellness will make it all go better.
So, how do I do it? Well, I go simple. I do yoga daily. I practice restorative yoga. I drink water. I exercise with yoga and walking. I eat whole foods. I nourish my skin. I take my Shaklee Vitalizer Strip every day. I use two Shaklee Life Shakes with fresh fruits and veggies and almond or coconut milk a day with two snacks and a really good dinner with ample supply of veggies, whole grains, lean meats and herbs. I drink home-made coconut milk lattes, green tea and home-made lemonade and a glass of wine occasionally. I rarely eat out or drink soda…. these are considered a treat or reward for good behavior!
With the Grave’s Disease causing havoc on my health and daily routine I opted to do Radioactive Iodine Treatment to kill my Thyroid. I am now back on track with my normal “Yoga Lifestyle'” and am really starting to feel like my old self again. Old self being key here as I just turned 50. Can that really be true? Well, I don’t feel 50 any more so that’s a plus. I now am doing things I never thought possible. My body is stronger and more fit than ever. Now, to take of the pounds I gain over the past two years.
